Low-carb dieting has become all the rage, and for good reason. It is a great way to jump-start your weight loss and not have to deal with terrible cravings or a really restrictive eating plan. The problem is that a lot of low-carb breakfast meals contain pork or a combination of dairy and meat — both of which are not kosher. But it is possible to eat low-carb and keep kosher at the same time. Here are a few low-carb, kosher diet meal ideas to get you started.
Steak and Egg Omelet
This steak and egg omelet does not contain any cheese, so it adheres to the kosher rule of separating meat and dairy. It contains very few carbohydrates since the omelet fillings are all meat and veggies.
- 2 eggs
- 4 ounces sirloin steak, cooked and sliced thinly
- a pinch of salt
- a pinch of black pepper
- 2 tablespoons white onion, chopped
- 2 tablespoons bell pepper, chopped
- 1/4 cup mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Saute the onions, pepper, and mushrooms in a little of the olive oil. Set them aside. Whisk the egg until lightly beaten. Heat a small skillet, and add the rest of the remaining olive oil. When the olive oil is hot, pour in the egg. Season with salt and pepper. Wait until the egg is beginning to solidify, and then place the sauteed veggies and steak on one side of the egg. Put a cover on the pan, and let the omelet cook until it is set — about two minutes. Flip the bare egg side of the omelet over the stuffed side. Serve, and enjoy.
Chicken and Egg Wrap
This recipe is great when you're on the go. It will remind you of a breakfast sandwich, but without the carbohydrate-dense roll or bagel. Instead, you'll use a spinach wrap, which contains far fewer grams of carbs. The wrap is also made without the bacon or sausage you so often see in non-kosher breakfast wraps.
- 4 ounces grilled or sauteed chicken breast, diced
- 1 egg
- 4 cherry tomatoes, sliced
- 6 leaves of fresh basil
- 1 green onion, sliced thinly
- A little of your favorite kosher hot sauce
- One spinach wrap
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Heat the olive in a skillet. When it is sizzling, add the egg, and cook until solid. Add the chicken, tomatoes, onion, and basil, and saute just until warm. Scoop the mixture into the center of a wrap, and roll it up. Enjoy.Share
